Jeep® Wrangler History
For over 75 years, the Jeep® brand has built SUVs that inspire a sense of freedom and adventure. At Jack Powell Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we are very proud our brand’s rich history. Born to help the U.S. Army during WWII, the Jeep vehicle emerged as a trusted campaign for thousands of Allied soldiers around the world. Originally designed to tackle the toughest off-road conditions, the Jeep brand has stayed true to its core throughout the years and has produced impressive vehicles designed for off-road adventures and city driving. One vehicle, in particular, can trace its roots back to the start of the Jeep brand and that is the Jeep Wrangler. While not the Jeep Wrangler that we know today, this iconic vehicle can trace its looks and off-road mentality to one of the first Jeep vehicles produced, the Jeep Willys MB.
The Jeep Wrangler name wasn’t introduced until 1987. The Jeep Wrangler (YJ) replaced the long-lived CJ Series that was introduced in 1945 and continued throughout the next few decades. The Jeep Wrangler series had a wider track, angled grille, rectangular headlamps, and a modernized interior. The Jeep Wrangler (YJ) stayed in production until 1996 when it was replaced by the Jeep Wrangler (TJ) series in 1997. Considered the ultimate escape machine, the Jeep Wrangler (TJ) offered outstanding on-road handling and legendary off-road capability. The Jeep Wrangler (TJ) was widely successful and won the prestigious “4×4 of the Year” award the year it was introduced.
The TJ model was stopped in 2006 and replaced with the Jeep Wrangler (JK) model, which is still in production today. Introduced in 2007, the Jeep Wrangler (JK) builds on the successful, original Jeep vehicle formula with an all-new frame, exterior and interior design, engine and Safety/Security and convenience features.
