Escondido, San Diego workers know that if you want top-notch performance, you need a diesel engine. However, with all their power diesel engines do have drawbacks. For one they are loud, which may be fine if you strictly use your vehicle on the job site, but if you also use it as a commuter vehicle, it could present issues on your next night out in San Diego. Another drawback is that diesel fuel is expensive. With these things in mind, RAM decided to redesign the diesel engine, giving it the power San Diego workers need while also upping its fuel economy and reducing the noise it generates.  The result was the RAM Ecodiesel engine, and it was a success when it debuted in 2014, but how does the 2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel engine compare? Follow along with Jack Powell Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram as we go over the RAM 1500 Ecodiesel engine specs and see how it fares in critic reviews.

2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel Truck Engine

The 2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel engine specs are something to behold. After its introduction in 2014, RAM has built on the power, performance, and durability of the Ecodiesel engine with each new RAM 1500 model year. The 2020 edition is the best yet because of its additional power and incredible fuel efficiency. We’ve collected the engine information for you below:

3.0L EcoDiesel V6 Engine:

  • 260 hp
  • 480 lb-ft of torque
  • 21 MPG City/30 MPG Highway
  • 2,040-pound payload capacity
  • 12,560-pound towing capacity (when properly equipped)

The 2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel engine specs are thrilling for a few reasons. The first is that this is all accomplished with an engine that is just loud enough to remind you that you have a diesel engine under the hood, but quiet enough that you can listen to your favorite radio station without having to crank the volume in Carlsbad. The second is that the RAM 1500 Ecodiesel engine manages to maintain its fuel economy and engine performance even while towing heavy loads across difficult terrain — something gas and regular diesel engines struggle with. Finally, the Ecodiesel 12,560-pound maximum towing capacity gives the RAM 1500 the best towing capacity in its class.

2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel Truck Specs: Reviews

You’ve heard our take on the performance of the 2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel engine specs, but what about the critics’? We’ve collected some reviews for you below on the 2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel truck specs below:

CNET: CNET boasts the 2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel truck specs for its rebuilt design, saying the RAM 1500 is the best pickup you can buy today: “It’s torque-tastic…For 2020, the engine has a brand-new turbocharger, intake ports and combustion system. The pistons have been redesigned and feature thinner rings for less friction. A new, low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system reduces power loss from the turbo. The end result is an engine that offers more power and torque than its predecessor, while offering reductions in noise, vibration and harshness.”

MotorTrend: MotorTrend was thrilled with the Ecodiesel capability, saying it made towing super boring (which is a good thing!): “Two of the diesel engine’s biggest advantages…are off-road and towing performance…The diesel’s biggest advantage yet revealed itself climbing a steep 50-ish degree mud-slicked grade. The torque advantage of the diesel, combined with four-low and a locked rear-diff, really gives the Ram the kick in the butt it needs to get up and over steep, slippery obstacles with ease. For the 1500 buyer who plans to do lots of off-roading, the torque and range advantage of the diesel can be hard to ignore—especially if your travels tend to take you far away from civilization.”

Kelley Blue Book: Kelley Blue Book says the advanced performance of the 2020 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel is evident as soon as you start the engine: “There’s very little noise coming from the 3.0-liter, 260-hp, 480 lb-ft V6 EcoDiesel. It emits a muted burble, just enough that you know it’s a diesel, but it’s such a soft purr there’s no question about the engine’s refinement. There are no rattles. There is no diesel smell. The strongest evidence that you are in a diesel-powered truck is in how it drives. Acceleration comes on strong and with confidence, without any noticeable lag. It feels more like a smooth, steady launch than the neck-bending sensation of a powerful gas engine.”
