Service Technicians with Checklist 68173373

We all know that we have to change the oil in our cars after a certain amount of time. But have you ever wondered what happens if you don’t get your oil changed? When oil breaks down after so much use and doesn’t work properly, then the heat from your engine and its many components doesn’t get absorbed. The performance of your vehicle will suffer and many parts under the hood can begin to malfunction. Learn more about what happens if you don’t change your oil with the experts at Jack Powell Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

What Does Oil Do for Your Car?

The most important job of oil is to lubricate your vehicle’s engine, although it does help with these other tasks:

  • Without fresh oil, your vehicle’s pistons can weld themselves to the cylinders.
  • Oil absorbs heat from the engine components to avoid overheating.
  • If you don’t change your oil, then dirt and debris can build up and inhibit the engine.
  • Fresh oil keeps your vehicle running properly on San Diego streets.

How Often Should I Change My Vehicle’s Oil?

The rule of thumb for changing your vehicle’s oil used to range around every 3,000 miles. Nowadays, Carlsbad drivers with recent models can expect to typically drive anywhere from 5,000 to 7,500 miles before needing a change. Some models can even drive up to 10,000 miles before needing a change. To know for sure, you should check your vehicle’s owner’s manual, although certain driving habits will likely alter the amount of miles you can go before needing replacement oil.

How Do I Change the Oil Myself?

The first thing you’ll need to know for sure is the specific kind of oil that your vehicle requires. Once you’re in possession of the right oil, follow these steps to change your oil:

  1. Jack up your car with jack stands or steel ramps.
  2. Find the oil drain plug on the bottom of your oil pan underneath your engine, and then place an oil basin directly underneath the plug. Unscrew the plug and allow the old oil to drain out completely; a process that could last up to 15 minutes. When you’re sure all the oil has drained, you can replace the plug.
  3. Locate your oil filter, and remove it with an oil filter wrench. Expect a bit of extra oil to drain out when you remove the filter and make sure you keep the basin underneath to catch it.
  4. Take your new filter, being sure to rub a bit of oil around the rubber seal – this ensures your filter is watertight and is an essential step.
  5. Set the new filter in place, then tighten it by hand.
  6. Now that your old oil is completely drained and a new filter is in place, you can remove your oil cap. Pour in the specified amount of new oil, which you can find in your owner’s manual if you’re unsure. Finally, replace the oil cap.
  7. Before you’re finished, you should check your oil level by pulling out the dipstick. If you’re still low, you may add another ounce and check the level again. Once you get a proper oil level reading, you’re good to go!
