The Jeep® lineup features two plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) built for both the trail and the daily commute near Carlsbad: the Jeep® Wrangler 4xe and the Jeep® Grand Cherokee 4xe. Unlike a conventional hybrid, these Jeep® 4xe models put you in control with three selectable E-Selec™ driving modes — Electric, Hybrid, and eSave — so you can tailor your powertrain to exactly what the moment demands.
Hybrid Mode is the default E-Selec™ setting on all Jeep® 4xe models. It blends power from the high-voltage battery and the turbocharged combustion engine, with the vehicle’s computer automatically determining the most efficient power source for the conditions. The Jeep® Wrangler 4xe achieves an EPA-estimated 49 MPGe* in Hybrid Mode, while the Jeep® Grand Cherokee 4xe achieves an EPA-estimated 56 MPGe* combined — making Hybrid Mode the go-to setting for most Vista commutes and highway drives alike.
Electric Mode runs the Jeep® 4xe on 100% battery power as long as the charge level is at 1% or above — meaning your daily errands through San Marcos can be nearly emissions-free at the tailpipe. The Jeep® Wrangler 4xe offers up to 21 miles of EPA-estimated* electric-only range, and the Jeep® Grand Cherokee 4xe offers up to 24.6 miles* — enough to cover most short daily drives without using a drop of fuel.
eSave Mode uses the combustion engine as the primary power source to preserve your remaining battery charge for later. The engine still shuts off automatically during low-demand moments — like sitting at a stoplight in Valley Center — for added efficiency. In eSave Mode, the Jeep® Wrangler 4xe delivers an EPA-estimated 20 combined MPG* on gasoline alone. This mode is ideal when you’re headed into San Diego on the highway and want to save your electric range for city driving at your destination.
Every Jeep® 4xe model comes standard with Regenerative Braking, which captures kinetic energy during deceleration and braking and converts it back into battery charge. For drivers spending time in stop-and-go traffic, this means every slowdown helps extend your electric range — no plugging in required. Regenerative Braking is enabled by default and can be turned off at any time.
It depends on your drive. Hybrid Mode is the best default for most situations — it automatically optimizes between battery and engine power for peak efficiency and performance. Switch to Electric Mode when your battery is charged and you’re running short local errands to maximize zero-emission driving. Use eSave Mode on longer highway stretches when you want to preserve your battery charge for city driving at your destination. For off-road trails near San Diego, Hybrid Mode also provides the best combination of instant torque and sustained power.
For most everyday driving, leave your Jeep® 4xe in the default Hybrid Mode. The system automatically manages when to draw from the battery versus the engine, so you don’t need to think about it. If you’ve plugged in overnight and have a full charge, starting your morning commute in Electric Mode is a great way to drive emission-free before the system transitions automatically. eSave Mode is most useful as a deliberate tool — not a default — when you have a specific reason to hold battery charge in reserve.
Indefinitely. Unlike Electric Mode, which is limited by battery charge, Hybrid Mode has no range limit. The combustion engine works alongside the battery and helps replenish it as you drive. When the battery is fully depleted, the system automatically transitions to eSave Mode and continues running on gasoline — you’ll never find yourself stranded waiting for a charge.
Jeep has adjusted its broader electrification roadmap in recent years as the industry recalibrates around PHEV and EV adoption. However, the 4xe plug-in hybrid platform remains an active part of the Jeep® lineup, and both the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe continue to be available for drivers who want real-world electric capability paired with Jeep’s legendary off-road performance.
