Chrysler purchased Dodge in 1981 and kept their popular models, including RAM pickup trucks. From 1981 to 2009, their “Dodge RAM” pickup trucks were there until they decided to restructure the brand and split Dodge and RAM into two separate model lineups.
In 2009, Dodge’s parent company, Chrysler, made RAM a standalone name for their rugged pickup trucks. This is why if you want to buy a pickup truck older than the 2009 model year, it’s called the Dodge RAM, and post-2009 pickups are RAM trucks. They’re still part of the same company, but Dodge cars, SUVs, and minivans are under the Dodge brand, and their pickup trucks are under RAM.
The split allowed Dodge to focus on building new vehicles to compete with the Ford Mustang and Chevy Traverse. Their standout vehicles for many Carlsbad drivers are the Dodge Charger muscle car and the Dodge Durango SUV.
