For 5.6 stunning miles, the Orosco Ridge Trail winds through the Cleveland Forest from Pamo Road to the Guejito Truck Trail. Bear in mind that trail maintenance is minimal, so you’ll likely encounter a lot of ruts and other rough terrain. That’s why the Orosco Ridge Trail is best experienced in dry conditions, not during or after rainfall. You’ll enjoy off-roading up and down the hills and taking in the awe-inspiring views.
To access the trail, turn onto West Haverford Road from the 78. Follow it as it turns toward the left and becomes Pamo Road. About two-and-a-half miles after the turn, you’ll see the well-marked trailhead.
This slim, 4.8-mile trail makes its way through part of the Cleveland National Forest in Ramona. As you travel along Santa Ysabel Creek, soak in the fantastic mountain views, or stop at any of the recreation spots or hiking trails. This is a popular route that is regularly maintained, but there are still some ruts and bumpiness.
While there is no specific starting point, you can get to the Santa Ysabel Truck Trail from Pamo Road or Black Canyon Road. Remember that this is a narrow, one-vehicle-wide trail, so be mindful of other off-roaders.
North Palomar Mountain Road is among the best off-roading in Escondido, offering a scenic, 10.6-mile drive on a maintained road. With that said, you’ll likely travel over some rough and challenging terrain, especially when the road is muddy–which is often. Make sure your vehicle is properly equipped for any conditions you might encounter.
Find this trail by taking Highway 79 through Temecula until the three-way stop for Highway 371. Keep going on 79 for a short distance, and you’ll see the Rancho California RV Resort. Turn right into the resort, and stay on this road until you come to a dirt lot–this is the trailhead–in front of you.
